Julian W. Couzens
Julian and his wife, Evelyn, moved to Bloomington, Indiana, in 1987, following their retirement, he as an architect in private practice in Westfield, New Jersey, and she as financial assistant to the Dean of the School of Education at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Julian was awarded his degree in Architecture in 1934 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York. After working for a major architectural firm in New York City, Julian settled into private practice in Westfield. He was an active fellow of the American Institute of Architects and served as chairman of the New Jersey Committee on Building Laws and Regulations. He was a member of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and was also licensed in Connecticut, New York, and Pennsylvania. Julian also served on the Westfield Board of Appeal, the Joint Civic Committee and the Mayor’s Committee on Culture and Beautification. He was a Rotarian with senior active classification. His practice included residential, commercial, and public architectural design projects. One of his proudest and most admired design achievements was the Echo Lake Church of Christ in Westfield.
Julian was a man of varied interests. In particular, he had a passion for tennis and enjoyed competing and following professional tennis well into his retirement years. He was also a musician, having studied the violin as a young man, and an active member of the Westfield Choral Society. Reading, studying and listening to music provided a source to feed his imagination and nurture his creativity. He was a keen observer, always jotting down notes and ideas for further investigation. He always managed to incorporate his own life experiences and observations into the fabric of his work. He leaves behind an unfinished manuscript on the psychology of space as its delineation reflects the designer and the inhabitant.
Julian is survived by his loving wife of forty years, Evelyn Stauffer Couzens; two daughters, Judy (John) Smitka of Swansboro, North Carolina and Dona Couzens of Freehold, New Jersey; step-daughter Susan (Roland) Coté of Bloomington, Indiana; grandchildren Dona Michele (Richard) Daesner, Leanne Morrison, Robert Morrison, Michael (Jennifer) Zazzarino, and Amy (Philip) Kronenthal; great grandchildren Alexis Daesner, Hannah Daesner, Lindsay Dickerson and Marin Zazzarino: and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Alexander Kuszynski, his sister, Stella (Kuszynski) Augenstein, and his grandson, Darren Dickerson.
The immediate family will join together with close friends in a private memorial service honoring his life. The family requests that contributions be made in memory of Julian W. Couzens to Hospice of Bloomington Hospital, P.O. Box 1149, Bloomington, Indiana 47402.
